Re: May

I've loved using the technology. It has helped me finish tasks much quicker with less transition time lost.
We begin using the laptop as soon as the bell rings. First we pledge to the flag that I took a picture of with the hovercam and saved. I just pull it up each morning and we go from there. I'd like to set it up so that our day progresses with the hover cam continously, but I haven't found the time to get it done YET!
I think using the technology has brought a NEWNESS to teaching to me, AND I needed that!

I've still got to learn to be more dependent on technology, but I hesitate because I'm afraid the "lights will go out".  I have yet to remember to put in my attendance each morning.  Some days I just forget.  I have most definitely enjoyed the fact that there is no time spent on report cards, three week averages, and keeping that green register.  I love what technology is doing for us.  I feel like I have forgotten something each awards day because I can't remember filling out the report cards.  I have also learned that if I can't do a task on the computer, the kids will show me how.

I had forgotten about JPAMS as part of technology.  You are so right!! It has been so much easier than paper copies of everything, finding averages, and completing report cards.  I was afraid at first, too, that I would delete everything, but it has simplified so much!!

I agree that the level of computer literacy of our students is remarkable.  It is certainly easy to tell which students use a computer on a regular basis at home.  Many of them know quick fixes that I do not even know.  It is amazing as I look back to when I was a kid (and I am not very old) when we had one course of computer literacy in high school, and nobody had a PC in their home.  We have 4 laptops and three IPODs at our house now.  Unbelievable!!

This is always in the back of my mind that the "lights will go out". Do you think it is our age?  I do love all the work JPAMS has taken off of us though. I no longer get sick at my stomach or headaches from averaging grades and trying to keep up with the small print in the greenback register. I wish our parish would have done this alot sooner.

I look forward to JPAM in kindergarten too. Hopefully, it will be here next year too. I DO NOT miss those days of averaging grades with headaches from my eyes becoming weary and a sick stomach it taking such long hours to get it all done. I remember how much my co-workers helped me as well as my husband to call out grades or use the calculator to help me. I could not have made it without all of them.
As far as when the lights go out, I just always keep a book handy to read to my students.

Don't even say you also forget to do attendance! I thought I was the only one. I get started teaching when the first bell rings as we pledge to the flag using the hovercam and all the other things we do each am. I just have a hard time stopping once I get going. I've tried to make myself get into a new routine, but old habit are hard to break. Maybe next year I'll be able to start off with a better pattern of doing attendance with JPAM.

I agree with you Linda.  I am so intimidated by the computer and other technology. I guess maybe its because of my age and things shouldn't be so easy.  Just glad to get rid of the all green back registers.

Re: May (1)

Just having the projector mounted has added so much to my classroom.  We use it for our vocabulary words each week and I have been able to add so many extra teachable moments by using the internet.  I even found that when a copy machine was down, I could quickly type the handout and put that on the computer.  I did try writing with the mimio board, but need more practice.  It was fun for me when I put study questions on the screen as the children looked on.  I even wrote them in different colors!!!  My students loved when I looked up funny songs to go with our science lessons.  I believe that technology has allowed me to grasp the students' attention in a way that I hadn't been able to do.
There is still a lot I have to learn. I hope to get the hover cam.  I got really excited when I saw it in use.  I did not ask for one at first because I felt that I wasn't capapble of learning to implement another thing in my lessons.  The hover cam will replace a lot of work, but it will certainly help with those "y'all look at this" moments.  I can't wait.

I have used internet access to pull up music for the students too.  When we had our reading story about jazz, we had fun listening to music from some of the different singers mentioned in our book.  It does catch their attention, and it might be something that some of them might not experience any where else.

I agree that the internet has helped my students to share some experiences they may not get elsewhere.  I am always amazed at how many of my students seem to have no concept of life outside of West Carroll Parish. I like the opportunity the technology gives me to help these little ones experience more of the world around them.  It gives new meaning to world-wide web.

We did the same thing for Reading story this week. Many of them had never heard jazz music before!  It was one of those moments where you can actually "see' them making the connections between what they read about/ learned and the real world.

I completely agree.  With first graders, it is hard sometimes to hold their attention for very long, especially at the beginning of the year.  The technology that we have is most helpful in completing this task.

Technology definitely has had an impact in my classroom this year.  It has helped to make the students eager to learn about new things.  (We always do research together on the web when we have a new story, idea, or when we hear about something that we are just curious about...even current events.)  Technology cuts down on discipline problems in the classroom.  We don't have "extra" time on our hands.  If students finish earlier than others, they immediately get on one of the classroom computers to take an AR test or access one of the math sites that Mrs. Drurey has familiarized them with in Computer Lab.  We use our microphones and speaker for reading aloud, making presentations, or acting out plays.  We also use the DVD/VCR, TV, and CD player.

Technology has been helpful in my classroom in many ways.  I love that our attendance, grades, and report cards are now on JPAMS.  I have been able to use the projector, laptop, and hovercam to help with instruction in reading, spelling, and math.  Useful websites like Waltke Web and Pearson Successnet have been valuable tools in teaching reading and math.  EAGLE tests have allowed me to demonstrate test-taking skills for students.  And this book study has given me a realization of how much technology has aided with instruction and bookkeeping throughout the year.

I love JPAMS also.  My main worry is coming back to first grade from PreK was in all the paper work I would have to do.  Knowing that the most stressful part is done by the computer is awesome.

Technology has truly impacted my life in the classroom from 28 years ago. I would have never thought that averaging grades in a gradebook and transferring grades into a greenback register would have become obsolete. I am so thankful for JPAMS. This has lightened my load tremendously.  I am also using the hovercam and smartboard to help with my instruction in ELA and science.

JPAM is great.  Love being able to see a student average each time I put in a grade.  I also like that the parents can see the progress each week.

I agree. I really find JPAM to be an asset not only for making grades so assessible to parents, but also in the way I keep me constantly aware of each students status.  Never caught off guard by a poor average anymore.

The technology in my classroom has been a great help to my instruction this year.  Using the mimo board with the computer is great.  I love that I can look it up on the internet and place it on the screen for the students to see.  The mimo pad is also very useful.  I still dont write very well on it but I like that we can write the answer in to worksheets or have the students do it.  Makes doing worksheet less boring.  But my favorite techology is the hover cam.  High five to who ever found this device.  Best tool in my toolshed.  Love it, and use it all the time.

I agree 100% about the hovercam.  It sure is better than the old overhead.  Using the mimeo board to model correct handwritig has been hilarious!  Recently one of my students said, "You're doing better, Mrs. Simms.  That looks really good."  I do agree that worksheets are not as boring since we do some together using the technology.  My students love to use mimeo and take turns writing on the screen.  I have their full attention when I begin passing the mimeo around.

I didn't ask for a hovercam because I didn't figure I could learn to use it.  I am very anxious to get one now that I have seen one in use. It's hard to imagine what something can do.  I have to see it in action.  From now on, I will order anything that becomes available and make myself learn to use it.  Mimeo board still intimidates me.

The impact of technology has been very positive.  The technology available to me has aided me with instruction and has enriched the learning process for so many of my students.  I believe that they were able to learn more and will hopefully be able to retain more knowledge.  I will be researching this summer on more ways that technology can help me in my classroom.

Re: May (7)

To be completely honest, I was not excited about the new technology.  I didnt want to replace the hands-on activities with technology, but I have found the use of the mimeo and hovercam to be very beneficial. Instead of replacing my hands-on activities, the new technology has enhanced learning in other areas.   The hovercam saves me so much time.  If I see that students are struggling with an independent worksheet, I don't have to wait to make an overhead.  I just use the hovercam.  Where I used to worry if students could see the board easily, I can use the mimeo and projector and am confident that all can see well.  The use of the web to enhance learning has been wonderful.  My students look forward to going on field trips to various places right from our room. Now that I understand how to use the equipment, I plan to do research over the summer and be prepared to use more websites available for Kindergarten.

I can say that I was scared of the technology, but I stepped out of my comfort zone and absorbed a good bit this year.  It has been really beneficial. I love jpams.  NO REPORT CARDSor 3 WEEK AVERAGES!!!  My smartboard has just introduced me to a new way of teaching.  It's amazing.  There are so many wonderful ways to introduce lessons, teach lessons, review lessons......Do I need to go on?  I have learned more ways to utilize the Promethean and I still have so much more to learn.  Next for my room is the hovercam and I can't wait.

Re: May (9)

Due to the tremendous stress and pressure of our jobs, we often "freak out" when presented with ONE more thing we have to learn how to do.  JPAM for example was like the devil when first shown to us.  I was not excited about it.  But now I see the many advantages of the program and I am so thankful for the relief it has brought from the mounds of paperwork we were previously required to do.  The addition of the projector and computer to my classroom has also been much enjoyed.  I tried to remember how I taught certain things before I had it and I find it hard to believe that I was successful in conveying certain concepts without it.  I am appreciative of the efforts our supervisors have made to make these things available to us and the hard work required to TEACH us how to use them!!  The hovercam is still on my list of "Things I Must Learn To Do" but I am tackling that next.

I love putting my grades and attendance in the computer.  It is great to know that the three week averages and report cards are printed and sent to me each six weeks.  What a time saver!
My Promethean is fun to use and helps keep the attention of my first graders.  The children enjoy counting money, playing math games, coding words in phonics, watching science and social studies fims and watching special movies on Friday.  It really has ehanced the learning process for children.  It has made my job more enjoyable.

I believe some of the new technology we have gotten this year has been some of the most functional and useful we have ever had.  It has given my students more practice and more visual retention and exposure than anything else we have done.  It has taken away a great deal of that ole paper and pencil busy work that might have been used for retention in the past.  I have really enjoyed implementing this technology.

This old dog was not in favor of change!! And with all of the problems we had at first with getting everything working together and staying connected I was ready to chunk it all out the door. But now I really like it! I still have a lot to learn. This equipment can do so much more than I have been able to absorb so far. The hover cam is a remarkable replacement to the old overhead. The children can be a part of what you are doing with the mimio. Their attention is so much more focused on our worksheets done with it. I still feel somewhat awkward writing on it but the children have encouraged me as I improve. they like to show their work under the hover cam. It is all good ,it just took me way out of my comfort zone.

Having technology in the classroom has made my lessons more interesting for the students and for me. Childern in this day in time are technology minded. Simply because they have grown up with technology all there lives. So using technology in the classroom just makes it real and comfortable for them to engage in learning.

Technology has a huge impact on my students!  We introduce our vocabulary/amazing words on Mondays using slideshows- the kids love these animations and sound effects!  The mimio is wonderful for the guided saxon math lessons.  We use our projector to listen to music, watch videos, and play games.  The students love to use the mimio to work a problem and write a sentence.  It is definitely funny watching them learn how to use it.  I'll even let them draw pictures on it from time to time.  I love technology in the classroom!

Technology, used as a learning made a positive impact in my classroom this year. Students were able to take virtual fieldtrips, listen and view fun read-a-louds, and participate in fun activities.  My students had a much broader exposure of learning.
